Think Like a Black Belt – the self defense E-Book

by Lori Hoeck on June 19, 2009

The launch of this website has been both amazing and heartwarming. Thank you for all the warm wishes and comments. I’m so excited to be able to download decades of self defense information from my mind to this website. My goal is to dial down the martial artistry and pump up the practicality of what I’ve spent years teaching to karate students.

At my best guestiment, though, that could take hundreds of posts!

If you need self defense information more quickly because:

  • You have a daughter or son heading off to college and you want them to be safe ….
  • Your teenager is taking a night job at a local convenience store, and you don’t know what to tell him or her to look out for to be safe …
  • You want to pass on self defense skills to your children, but have little information yourself …

… then I have good news for you!

My e-book has launched: “Think Like a Black Belt, Take Charge of Your Own Safety.” The full details are here.

UPDATE: Awesome reviews of the book here at  Betsy Wuebker’s blog Passing Thru and here at Linda Abbit’s blog Tender Loving Eldercare .

The e-book introduces readers to 15 of the most powerful, practical, and proactive self defense skills I’ve used to teach non-martial artist how to be street smart and heads-up savvy.

It also includes over a hundred compelling discussion questions for parents to help their children become safer, stronger, and smarter about self defense.

Unlike the website, where I write comprehensively on physical, mental, and emotional self defense, the e-book focuses more on:

  • avoiding the bad guy’s radar with body language, voice, and boundary setting skills
  • revealing what predators look for when they profile for their targets
  • discovering how to increase awareness and vigilance
  • sensing danger in patterns of behavior
  • looking beyond a predator’s snake oil charm

It’s important information we good guys need to know and pass on to our children.

Hi Lori. Congratulations on the launch of your ebook! How does it feel? :-) I’m already looking ahead to your next posts… they all sound terrific. I’ll be back.

Hi Davina,
Always good to see your comments! Thank you.

“How does it feel?” Great for finishing a long, hard journey, but also somewhat daunted wondering how to get the word out so people can start using the information and teaching their children.

Hi Lori,

I am thrilled you got this book published. Having read it, I can attest to the fact it is a real treasure trove of fabulous and helpful information that should be read by everyone.

You know I’ll do whatever I can to help you get the word out. Other than Twitter, let me know if there’s more I can do.

Congratulations! You’ve done GREAT!

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for so much for reading and endorsing my book!

And yes I’d love your help! Thank you for asking. Because the information in the book teaches how to sidestep the radar of predators and criminals, it would be great for everyone to know and teach to their children to make them safer, smarter, and more street-savvy. I’m sure all of us would like to prevent any more horrific AMBER alerts going out in our lifetimes.

Twitter is a great start — Thanks! I’d love to find 10 or more other bloggers willing to read and review the e-book. I’d also love to connect with mommy bloggers, daddy bloggers, and parenting bloggers who would review it as well.

If anyone else can help, please let me know. :-)

I’d love to be one of those to review the book. I’m a bit behind – not up and running on Twitter yet – but I will be happy to review it. I could interview you about it on my blog if that complements the reviews you’ll no doubt be getting soon on other people’s blogs. Just let me know what works best for you.

Hi Janice,
THANK YOU! I’ve sent you an email about it.

I must say, the blogging community ROCKS!

Hi Lori. Congratulations on the release of your book. I practiced Kung-Fu for about 4 years and it sure does help you to focus your mind and thoughts.

I bet while authoring this blog and writing a post, you have to hold yourself back with each post and not put too much information all on one page. There’s just so much inside information you want people to know when it comes to martial arts.

Hi John,
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment — here and at Betsy’s site. I’m glad you understand how hard it is to dial down what’s in my brain for each post! But it’s also a challenge that’s forcing me to be more clear and concise, so it’s all good!

Blogging definitely helps us to really streamline what we think is important. I tend to always want to give too much info.

Hi John,
I keep my writing in check here by remembering I’m talking to those who may have never seen this information before. I envision a niece or nephew or aunt instead of a karate student as my audience.
