Independence Day song for targets of narcissists

by Lori Hoeck on July 4, 2010

FreeFromNarcissistI love this line in the song by Sara Bareilles King Of Anything: “Who cares if you disagree? You are not me”

I heard this today and had to make it an Independence Day song for those dealing with (or done with) their narcissist, crazy maker, unsafe person, or emotional manipulator. Here’s the link to the video.

VIDEO:  Sara Bareilles KING OF ANYTHING

{Excerpts from the lyrics. NOT THE FULL SONG.}

You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast

I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

You’re so busy making maps with my name on them in all caps
You got the talking down, just not the listening

————–

I don’t have to tell you, but you can decide “it is your turn to decide.”

There are people who judge others so easily as though they knew how to be where they are, but they don’t. No, they couldn’t step inside their shoes even for a single day.

“You sound so innocent, all full of good intent; Swear you know best; You got the talking down, just not the listening…” — I can relate. Love the connection you’ve made with this and Independence Day, Lori. Happy 4th to you.

Hi Joyce,
My mother always used to tell us kids, “Never judge someone until you walk a mile in their moccasins,” but sometimes we never really can.

Hi Davina,
Listening and using “I” statements are skills I wish everyone knew.

Thank you for the Happy 4th. It was an emotional weekend on so many levels.

Hi Lori .. people do seem to think they know best for us .. and don’t let us decide … as Davina says “I” can relate .. I switch off now when some people are talking to me – making suggestions .. because they have no idea of where I’m at or where I’m going .. it is very interesting – they can’t seem to grasp the other side and its concepts, or accept that actually I know what I’m talking about and what’s happening … I’ve learnt to stay polite – but I can vent here!!!

.. if I’m with someone I consider narcissistic – then I know in advance .. I don’t take it on board .. I’ll take note .. but no more: my vent is sealed here – probably a good thing .. no mixing at all.

Just glad you’re not dependent – but are independent .. have a good week, with thoughts and a hug .. Hilary

“You sound so innocent, all full of good intent”

Isn’t that typical of a narcissist. It’s a great song.
