Self defense made easy? A list of the best, simple moves?

Well, as close to it as I can get on a blog post. This is from my Think Like A Black Belt newsletter #10, which you receive when downloading my free self defense ebook.

Some of these moves can knock someone out, but they also create a few moments of shock and pain for the attacker, otherwise known as distraction, so you can escape.

Unless you are trained, one move may not be sufficient, so be ready to run to safety or follow-up with another move.

NOTE: Some of these moves are graphically explained, so proceed at your own discretion.

HEEL PALM TO CHIN
With wrist bent back toward your own arm and fingers out of the way, the lower, fatty part of the hand makes a good striking surface. For a chin strike, an uppercutting motion is best. The motion is similar to a pushing someone away, but the hand moves in a rising motion from your chest or stomach level forward and up under their chin. Strikes need to drive through the chin, not stop and bounce back, but don’t lose your balance leaning forward.

STRIKE TO NOSE
Take a pen or pencil and tap the long part of it across the bony, top part of your nose. Start softly, but then tap until it hurts a bit. You will find it takes very little tapping pressure to cause some pain. Now imagine bringing down a closed hand, a rock, or a bottle of water on someone’s nose, and you have some idea of how effective this can be.

SHIN KICK
If you’ve ever hit your own shin, you know this pain. This strike can be made with a quick, powerful kick (no long wind-up like on TV) or swinging a very hard object downward onto the shin (like a bat).

SMASHED HAND
When someone grabs your wrist or arm, find ways to quickly and forcefully slam an attacker’s hand into something to cause their grip to loosen or release. This is especially painful for them if you hit their fingers or top part of their hand against a metal door knob, the edge of something, or the corner of a wall.

ELBOW STRIKES
The elbow can strike in many directions: forward or backward into the ribs or upwards into the solar plexus or chin. One strike is very similar to the motion you make to reach back across yourself in the car to grab your seat belt. The trick is to strike while putting some weight behind it. Just throwing an elbow with arm muscle power alone won’t be too effective. Think more like a batter getting reading to hit a baseball — use the hips and body weight behind the elbow to give it power.

PINCH
OK, so a super-macho person may laugh at the idea of a pinch, but it’s about location, location, location. Imagine where you would never want to be pinched and you know where to pinch an attacker. Any place the skin is thin, like the back of hands, are most painful. You can try it for yourself it you want.

STOMP ON TOES AND FEET
We’ve all dropped something on our toes or stubbed them. The pain can drop you to your knees. To do this, your knee comes up (which raises your foot) and then strike down onto their foot with your heel. Best to have some weight behind it. Also, it takes very few pounds of pressure to drive a high heel through another foot (or other body parts).

HEAD BUTT
Think about how you sneeze. The head tilts back as your breathe in before the sneeze and then comes forward fast and hard during the sneeze. That’s pretty much how you do a head butt, except with deliberate power and targeting.

Hit with the area of the forehead close to the normal hairline. A good target is coming down on the bridge of the nose, but the cheek bones, hinge area of the jaw, eye socket, and temple are vulnerable to the head butt’s power.

MAKE ATTACKER LOSE BALANCE & TWIST OR FALL
Timing a hip check on an attacker as they pass by something like a coffee table, cliff edge, or a sharp, pointy object can cause them to fall or worse. Think hockey player, but don’t give the move away early.

EYE GOUGE
It’s nasty sounding, but a blinded attacker is a lot easier to free yourself from and escape. No, don’t try to do a Three Stooges eye poke — unless that’s all you can remember to do and then do it with power and repetition. The thumb goes in the eye at the outer edge of one eye socket while the middle finger goes in the other eye, also at the outer edge of the eye socket. Push in, bring thumb and finger toward one another (closer to the nose), and pull.

HAMMER FIST
When you make a fist, the pinky or little finger side of the fist is called the hammer fist. Imagine bringing a hammer fist down on a nose! It can also be used to strike powerfully down on the front side of the shoulder to break the clavicle. If grabbed from behind, you can hammer fist backward into the groin.

EAR CLAP
Eardrums are vulnerable because they can’t take sudden pressure change. You can create that sudden change by cupping your hands and bringing them forcefully together like a powerful clap, but instead of clapping hands together, you clap (strike) the attackers ears at the same time.

FINGER BREAK
Yes, this is painful and it takes hardly any pressure to perform. The trick is to grab the finger before they pull away and to bend the finger in the direction it will break. Just grabbing a finger and flailing won’t help. You must grab and snap it painfully back with full power.

—-

It’s best to visualize and practice these before you need them. If you can learn to flow powerfully from one move to another, you will add immensely to your self defense options.

Disclaimer: Consult a doctor before engaging in any physical activity and do not practice this with a partner unless under the supervision of a trained instructor. Use them only in self defense situations in which you feel your life or the life of another is in imminent danger.

When using self defense moves:

Feet must be apart or you will lose balance as you create power.

Use “whole body” motions instead of just the arm or leg muscles.

Stepping with a strike can add power, but watch your balance.

Strikes must be delivered with a powerful & resolved mindset.

Since one strike may not work, move quickly to repeat the strike or move to another.

Keep striking until you can free yourself and get to safety.

Use deep, powerful yells to add power, attract attention, & psyche yourself up.

If you are grabbed by the wrist or both wrists — practice deliberate calm — you still have many other weapons at your disposal.

Thank y0u for stopping by to learn about self defense,

When I started this website last May, it revolved around the launch of my first ebook, Think Like a Black Belt: Take Charge of Your Own Safety. (My second ebook on narcissism is now available.)

Both the first ebook and blog came about because I looked at my own personal safety and realized it would be a rare day that I’d have to use my 3rd degree black belt skills.

Why?

Self defense against criminals, bullies, and predators is often more about relationship than combat. Muggers, rapists, and con artists cast their eye for a certain type of person they think they can control on some level.

To avoid their radar and control, I use the power of body language, intuition, awareness, a strong voice, boundary setting, pattern recognition, response vs. reaction, and a whole host of other non-martial arts skills

You can discover these for yourself. I write about them in my ebooks and on this site.

Yes, taking a violence prevention session or a combat or martial arts class is fun, fulfilling, and fitness-building. You will learn much, so I recommend them.

Self Defense Myth: Only big, strong, or trained people can survive an attack.

Most movies and media show the bad guys or the heroes winning fights.

Women, children, handicapped people, and older citizens rarely come across as anything but victims or needy characters the hero must protect.

As a black belt and Emergency Medical Technician, I know the human body has many vulnerable points. You know this too if you have ever been momentarily disabled when you:

Run into a low doorway or glass door

Blast your shin against a coffee table

Catch your finger in a heavy door

Have the wind knocked out of you

Catch a fold of skin between bi-folding closet doors

Stub your toe so hard you drop to the floor in agony

Hold a baby who rears back and slams its head into your face

Drop a large object on your foot or a horse steps on it

Twist your ankle by stepping into an unseen hole

Have a bug or wood chip fly into your eye

As for that last one listed, I love the scene in the television series Bones when main character Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan abruptly pokes a creepy, verbally threatening murderer in both eyes as he is taken into custody. When the man shuts up in agony, she says with a small smile, “I find very few people scary once they have been poked in the eye.”

Any of those previously mentioned moments of pain can be re-created by you on an attacker in this “Self Defense Made Easy” guide:

Heel palm strike to chin or bring any object down on bridge of nose

Shin kicks

Smash someone’s hand into a wall or table while they are grabbing you

Elbow strikes to the solar plexus

Pinch sensitive skin areas

Step on toes

Use your head to smash forwards or backwards into attacker’s nose repeatedly

Stomp toes and feet

Make someone lose balance and twist or fall painfully

Gouge eyes — with fingers or anything handy

These self defense moves aren’t complicated — anyone can do them. They allow a window of opportunity to get off the attack track and take action.

If you decide the moment is right to fight back, you must be like a wild mother bear or cornered badger: total ferocity, loud yells, and a resolve to do whatever it takes to get to safety.

Question: Have you ever accidentally injured yourself or someone else with these kinds of non-martial arts moves? Perhaps a coffee spill or turning too fast around a corner and knocking someone to the ground?

A front hair grab is a highly effective technique used by bullies and abusive Dark Hearts to intimidate their insecure victims. The attacked person feels they have no way to fight back because of a history of giving in or the attacker’s size seems insurmountable. As for attackers, a hair grab makes them feel powerful because it says, “I’m in control” or “I have ‘a handle’ on this person.”

What most attackers don’t know is how vulnerable they make themselves with a hair grab. With one arm up high, the attacker’s body becomes vulnerable to kicks and punches. (Oh the things you can do to an exposed rib cage!)

But there’s also one technique that pits most of your body weight against an attacker’s wrist, so their size doesn’t matter! Take a moment right now to see how far back you can make one hand bend backward over your forearm. I’m flexible, and I can’t hardly get it the lower part of my hand to bend beyond a 90 degree angle. Imagine the pain of abruptly forcing that wrist further than it wants to go.

Wait. You don’t have to imagine it. Just watch the video. That’s real pain happening.

Both of my hands smash downward one at at time onto attackers hand, holding his hand firmly in place.

Here’s how to to it:

One hand, then the other smashes the attacker’s grabbing hand onto your head – do not interlock fingers (SEE photos at bottom of post)
This does two things: stops the pain of the hair pulling and traps the attacker’s hand onto your head in a way that will lock the wrist into place for the next move.

Strong side foot slides straight back – keep hand smashed to your head!

Strong leg (which is right leg for me) slides backwards.

This is a set up move only. It doesn’t cause pain or better trap the attacker’s hand. Remember when Indiana Jones takes out his bull whip and first draws the handle back behind his head in anticipation of the whipping motion? Same thing here.

Instantly (as fast as the “choo” part of an “ahh…choo” sneeze) follow up the foot slide with a bend forward at waist as head and chin tuck down until you can see your back foot — keep hand smashed to your head!

With his hand firmly smashed onto my head, I bend at waist and take my chin closer to my chest until I can see my back foot.

With pain at maximum and attacker on knees, I release his grabbing hand.

This is the part where Indiana Jones whips his bull whip forward. Your body motion and hand trap will torque the attacker’s trapped wrist backward into such pain that he will think it’s breaking and ripping inside.

To avoid the pain, most attackers will – without thinking — drop abruptly and painfully to one knee, maybe both. If you are lucky, the knee will hit so hard the attacker will be hurting now in two places.

I'm now ready to run and free myself from the attack.

Release the hand and run to safety … or … ahem … otherwise deal with the situation.

About practice:
To work, the entire release technique should take less than a second to perform (or the attacker will counter before you can make it work effectively). This release from front hair grab self defense technique requires a partner to get the full effect. Also recommended are: a doctor’s OK to exercise with abrupt moves, good balance, and supervision by a trained instructor.
NOTE: Realize the training partner who is playing the attacker will feel like their wrist is breaking, so two things will happen: 1) you could hurt each other by being too gung-ho and trying too hard and too fast without sensible control and without initial slow-motion practice, or 2) you two will be so timid about the pain, you’ll use too little speed and power for effective practice. Thus the need for a trained instructor to help.

Hey, I can only do so much from this end of things!

Some things that will make the self defense move ineffective are:

Wrong timing – it must be one fast, smooth, and flowing action to work

Unsure balance – it won’t help much if the step and head motion make you lose your balance

Incorrect posture – many students who try this for the first time don’t step deep enough, step too deeply, or stick their butt out too much. The idea is to set up and whip forward, not stick out backwards

Failure to take chin down to chest and look toward the back foot — this is the key move to make it work

Bad hand placement — the fingers must not interlace and the wrist of the attacker must be free to bend.
The photos below show proper hand positions:

Smash attacker’s hand to your head with one hand, then the other — both hands firmly hold down the attacker’s hand to maintain control. When foot goes back and torso bends at waist, (see photos above), the chin tucks and head drops until you can see your back foot, thus creating torque and pain in the attacker’s wrist.

You’ve probably heard it before — put your keys between your fingers to better arm yourself against an attacker during a self defense situation. Those wickedly jagged keys poking out from your hand do look menacing, but will they really help?

It’s an automatic plus if you have the quickness of mind to take any kind of action when confronted or scared. Putting the keys between your fingers demonstrates to the attacker, “I’m ready sucka.” And quite frankly, looking down at those jagged points coming out of your fist is rather empowering.

One problem is many people who haven’t trained in boxing, combat, or martial arts don’t have powerhouse punches. If this is so, any punch delivered with or without the keys could be ineffective — except for collecting the attacker’s DNA.

Keys in the top photo are too unstable. Try the other ways of holding them instead.

Secondly, the keys have to be held correctly, or they will deflect away from the target. Try this — hold most of the keys and key ring inside your hand and put two keys on either side of your middle finger (top photo). Now go up to a hard surface and apply (gently!) the points of the keys to the surface. Slowly push harder.

Do the keys stay in place, driving forward into the surface or do they move around?

I gave a set of keys to my octogenarian mother and asked her to do the same. As she put the keys on the flat surface, one key went off to the side and the other started to dig a little into her skin. Unhurt, she looked at me as if I had played a joke on her, “Well this doesn’t work.” I smiled and said, “I know.” She threw a pillow at me. (My mom’s feisty.)

If you are in danger and decide to fight back in an attack, these will be better choices if you want to use your keys:

1) Stable key
Place the two outwardly pointing keys’ heads deeper into your fist, heads flat against your palm (middle photo). Use the fold of your palm at the crease as a back stop and stabilizing area. Now try slowly applying pressure to the same surface, adjusting the keys to find the most secure placement so they don’t move.

2) Prying key
Use the thumb and finger placement for prying something open. The bulk of the keys are stabilized inside the fist while a single key blade points out (bottom photo). The thumb pushes downward on the key so it is stable for slashing, raking, or gouging.

3) Hammering key
In the last photo, a second key extends out of the bottom of the hand. By letting go of the prying key and more firmly gripping the fist, this second key can also stab and slash.

Targets for the keys include the eyes, groin, scalp, throat, or backs of hands.

Play around with the three ways of holding the keys (bottom two photos) and decide which you prefer. Then practice how fast you can load up your fist with them. You want to get comfortable doing this now, so grab up your keys and give it a go!

A karate punch isn’t as easy as they make it look in the movies. Martial artists must align the knuckles, fist, wrist, and forearm just so. If the line up isn’t correct, all the driving speed and power known to break boards and bones can end up creating injury in the punching hand and wrist.

Trust me, it makes for a big fail whale of pain.

Most people, however, can learn to use the heel palm strike to the chin for basic self defense. But first a few questions:

Have you ever helped a friend move a stalled or stuck vehicle by pushing it?

Have you ever put a heavy box on a chest-high shelf and had to push it back a little further?

Then you already know a lot about letting your body’s power flow through your hands to an object.

Have you ever noticed how your hips and waist move when you vacuum the carpet with a heavy vacuum?

Have you ever swung a baseball bat really hard so that your hips seem to move with your arms?

Then you already know a bit about creating power by locking in your hip movements to an arm movement.

A heel palm strike in karate can use both the push and the hip motion together to create a driving, upward force capable of connecting so powerfully with a chin that it can:

Painfully slam the lower teeth into the upper teeth

Stun a person for a few moments

Put a person off balance enough to fall backwards

Knock someone out completely from the impact of the strike

Make a stunned attacker fall and knock themselves out when they hit the ground with their head

NOTE: The last one in the list includes a handy martial arts rule called, “Letting the ground do the work for you.” Part of Thinking Like a Black Belt in self defense is learning to use your environment for you — in this case the ground.

A heel palm uses the lower part of your palm where it is thicker and stronger as the striking surface and the fingers are pulled back out of the way:Notice though, just how close the striking arm is to the attacker. You can’t strike with the heel palm from far away. You must step in and powerfully drive up and back into the attacker.

So how do you put this all together to make a heel palm hit happen?

Well, can you do the dance from the 1960s called The Twist?

Assuming you have a doctor’s approval to engage in strenuous exercise and your back is fine, get up and do The Twist with me. Most of the martial arts is discovering and harnessing the “source of force” within your own body for every kick, punch, block, take-down, or throw. It’s how people of smaller size can kick butt on larger folks.

As you do The Twist, notice how the hips move in counter direction to your arms. Meaning, as your hands move forward to the left, your hips rotate to the right, and as your hands move forward to the right, your hips rotate to the left. This is the opposite of what we want. Now plant the feet instead of pivoting on them and let your hands and hips move together, so arms and hips swing left and then they swing together to the other side. Let arms and hips move as if locked into one another, with your feet as your stable base.

If done correctly — hips must be movin’ to the groovin’ with the hands — you will feel the power of what I learned in tang soo do as “hip action.” When you have a smooth, powerful side-to-side motion going, let one hand at a time fly out forward in front of you to an imaginary attacker’s chin with a heel palm strike upward.

Congratulations Reader-san, you have moved beyond Wax On and Wax Off, and are using the more complex the “Push Car-Vacuum Carpet-Do The Twist” method of executing a karate move.

——

If black belt level self defense skills came in a pill, everyone would want one. Heck, it sure would have saved me a lot of blood, sweat, and tears coming up through the ranks from white belt starting in 1981 to senior martial arts instructor. There are a lot of push-ups I could have avoided as well. In the strict and tough karate studios where I trained and taught, roughly 3 out of 100 people made it to black belt. Far fewer continued training to my level of third degree or above.

Fortunately, many self defense skills don’t require hundred of hours learning the art of combat or the artistry of powerful movements. Physical self defense can be dialed down to basics moves most people can learn (practice is on you though!). Other parts of self defense require a tougher-minded outlook combined with street-smart awareness. It’s thinking ahead, having a wary eye, and presenting yourself to the world in a way that makes criminals and predators naturally pass you by as undesirable.

You won’t learn how to move and groove like a black belt here, and I don’t have a magic pill either, but I’m excited to help you discover many of the insights I’ve picked up along the way to senior martial arts instructor — insights that will allow you to Think Like a Black Belt and keep you and your children safer, such as:

1) Physical Self Defense
Martial artists are, well, artists. We learn to move our bodies and mind with precision, force, and tenacious inner will. Our moves, stances, and even our breathing all channel into the art of combat. It is a beautiful and awesome thing when done well. Basic self defense, on the other hand, can be boiled down into simpler moves almost anyone can do.

Not everyone can hold their wrist and knuckles just right to land a powerful punch. Most people can however heel palm strike a chin, stomp a foot, bash a nose, break a collar bone, or bring a knee to the face of a doubled-over attacker.

Not everyone can break free of an attacker’s grab while putting the attacker in a joint lock or submission hold and taking them to the ground. Most people can however learn to break free from chokes, bear hugs, hair pulls, wrist grabs, and head locks.

Not everyone can choose from an arsenal of 40 blocks to parry a strike. Most people can however learn the basics of avoiding and blocking a punch or kick.

As you read my ongoing articles, you won’t learn artistic kicks and complicated grappling techniques (join a karate or Mixed Martial Arts school to do that!), but you will discover the down and dirty moves of street-smart self defense.

2) Mental Self Defense
Black belts walk and talk with long hours of class time experience adding subtle power to their body language, confidence to their step, and fire to their awareness. Dozens of tips can help you develop this more powerful self and thus become slippery Teflon to an attacker’s targeting phase. The tips can help you fashion a new mindset, a survivor’s instinct, and savvy street smarts. The most powerful of these tips are in my e-book Think Like A Black Belt — Take Charge of Your Own Safety, but I will cover them all over the next year in this blog as well. My book discusses all these tips:

Stop danger at a distance

Power up your natural radar

Activate the defensive senses

Sense danger in the patterns

Spot the snake behind the charm

Overcome media and movie myths

Avoid the vulnerability factor

Set boundaries to thwart attackers

Choose to comply, defuse, escape, defy, or fight

Powerfully guard your trust

Overcome panic and use your fear

Use body language like armor

Make your voice a weapon

Get off the attack track

Toss out niceness and rules

Thinking Like a Black Belt means never being in denial about what could happen, but always being alert, relaxed, and ready to swing into action, should you know what hit the fan.

3) Emotional Self Defense
Not all criminals and predators dress like thugs, twirl their mustaches with an evil laugh, or fly their pirate flag at full mast. A few spend their whole lives working to control, manipulate, and suck the life out of others. They come with different names, but bottom line is they sap you of energy, make your life miserable, drive you crazy with personal issues, act subtly or overtly superior, and make you feel like you have to walk on eggshells around them:

Scott M. Peck calls them People of the Lie.

Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, in their book Safe People, refer to them as “unsafe people.”

Your friends may call them exasperating and frustrating.

You may know them as emotional predators or vampires.

I call them Dark Hearts.

My subtitle to this section is called Defense Against the Dark Hearts — a take off on the name of a class in which juvenile fiction and movie character Harry Potter learns to deal with black magic attacks.

My goal in writing on these subjects is to better arm people against all sorts of predators and criminals. Also parents will be able to teach much of this information to their children, making them safer, too. The subject is huge and fascinating, so I will be adding more articles or blog posts to this site every week. Please feel free to subscribe — it’s free!

—

Please comment below!
Is there a subject you’d like me to cover that I haven’t mentioned?
Has a recent event or Amber Alert made you think more about self defense and personal safety?
